Still Becoming
"Still Becoming" lets the tool marks tell the story of its creation. The face and proportions are given much consideration and attention, but the textures are left rough with chisel, rasp and even chainsaw marks covering most of the piece. As the eye moves towards the face, the focal point of the subject, the surface is sanded smoothly to create contrast and a delicate refinement of the portrait. A piece that hopefully feels realistic yet raw. Carved from a single piece of basswood, she admits of her natural and imperfect medium, baring cracks out in the open as a feature. Read into the symbolism there as you will!
